Why a Calendar-Based Approach Works

Lawn care isn't a single season task — it's a rhythm of interconnected activities that build on one another. Mowing height in spring affects weed pressure in summer. Fall aeration sets up root depth before winter. Miss a step, and the next season starts at a deficit.

This calendar is organized around two primary grass-type zones: cool-season grasses (fescues, Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass — common in the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest) and warm-season grasses (bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede — prevalent in the South, Southwest, and Southeast). Where timing differs significantly between zones, both are noted.

Local microclimates matter. Use this calendar as a framework, then adjust by a week or two based on your zip code, soil conditions, and the actual weather patterns in your yard. Season-by-Season Task Breakdown

Spring (March–May)

Cool-season lawns: Resume mowing once grass reaches about 3 inches; set blade height to 2.5–3.5 inches. Apply a balanced starter fertilizer in early spring when soil temperatures reach 50°F. Spot-treat broadleaf weeds as they emerge. Apply pre-emergent herbicide before soil temps hit 55°F to suppress crabgrass.

Warm-season lawns: Hold off on fertilizing until grass breaks dormancy and is actively green — typically April in the Deep South, May further north. Scalp dormant turf to remove dead material, then apply pre-emergent for summer annual weeds.

Summer (June–August)

Raise mowing height by half an inch during heat stress periods — taller grass shades soil, retaining moisture and crowding out weeds. Water deeply and infrequently: about 1 inch per week total (rain included), preferably in early morning to limit evaporation and fungal risk.

Cool-season lawns often go semi-dormant in peak summer heat; avoid heavy feeding or aeration during this period. Warm-season lawns are in their prime — mid-summer is the ideal window for a second fertilizer application.

Fall (September–November)

This is the most important season for cool-season lawns. Aerate compacted soil in early fall (September is ideal), then overseed thin areas. Follow with a fall fertilizer high in potassium and phosphorus to strengthen roots before frost. Continue mowing until grass stops growing.

Warm-season lawns should receive their final fertilizer application no later than 6 weeks before the first expected frost to avoid triggering tender growth. Begin reducing irrigation as temperatures drop.

Winter (December–February)

Dormant lawns need minimal intervention. Avoid foot traffic on frozen grass — ice crystals inside grass blades can snap under pressure, creating dead patches. Service your mower, sharpen blades, and plan amendments based on a soil test (results often take 2–4 weeks). Order seed for spring overseeding while supplies are broad.

Pre-emergent herbicide

A weed-control product applied before seeds germinate. It creates a chemical barrier in the soil that prevents weed seedlings from establishing. Timing is critical — it must go down before soil temperatures trigger germination.

Core aeration

A mechanical process that removes small plugs of soil to relieve compaction, improve air and water penetration, and encourage deeper root growth. It is typically performed in fall for cool-season grasses and late spring for warm-season grasses.

Overseeding

The practice of spreading grass seed over an existing lawn to fill thin spots, introduce improved grass varieties, or thicken turf density without full renovation.

Soil temperature

The actual temperature measured at a depth of 2–4 inches in the soil, which drives seed germination and plant activity. It often lags behind air temperature by one to three weeks.

Dormancy

A natural survival state in which grass stops active growth in response to cold or drought. Dormant grass appears brown but is still alive; it resumes growth when favorable conditions return.

Scalping

Cutting warm-season grass very low (to 0.5–1 inch) in early spring to remove dead top growth and allow sunlight to warm the soil, speeding green-up after winter dormancy.
